Exploring the need of gender-transformative climate solutions for MENA

At Cairo Water Week 2025 stakeholders discussed how gender-transformative solutions such as explored through IWMI’s Al Murunah+ project are crucial in climate adaptation, and urge that more investment is needed.

IWMI’s work under the Al Murunah project advances resilient nature-based water solutions across MENA:

Applied researchers, government officials, implementing agencies and donors from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine gathered in Cairo, Egypt in February 2025 to exchange knowledge and strategize on scaling resilient nature-based water solutions across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. As part of IWMI’s Al Murunah project, stakeholders showcased their progress demonstrating the impact of collaboration and innovation in sustainable water management.

High-resolution climate downscaling insights for resilient nature-based water solutions:

The Al Murunah webinar ‘High-Resolution Climate Change Downscaling for Resilient Nature-Based Water Solutions in MENA,’ held on October 7, 2024, presented new insights on high-resolution and bias-corrected climate change downscaling to support the planning of Resilient Nature-Based Water Solutions demonstration projects across region. Technical findings include comprehensive climate baseline assessments and localized high-resolution projections for small basins in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The webinar highlighted the critical importance of reliable, high-resolution climate data for guiding effective local planning and decision-making. Underscoring the importance of partnerships among communities, governments, and researchers for sustainable solutions, the webinar brought together key Al Murunah project stakeholders, development professionals, climate-water-food nexus researchers, donor organizations and potential scaling partners.
